In past years, both national and external policy weaknesses drove the food crisis in southern African countries. Debates concerning causes and solutions to food insecurity in Southern Africa remain polarised. This policy discussion paper examines the state of food security in Southern Africa in terms of availability, access to and affordability of food, particularly among the most vulnerable in society. It examines, regional food consumption and production in relation to the impact of the past years increased world food prices, in the context of the energy and financial crisis.
